Tips for Dating Men with Children

By Alan Bentley

It's a sad indictment of our modern day society that many relationships end up in failure and even more sad is the fact that this often happens after the two people concerned have had children. Sometimes, the father can be found responsible for the custody of the children and must then raise them alone. If you are a single girl in the dating market, every now and again you will come across somebody who is in this situation. It's understandable that you will want to know all about dating men with children.

Dating men with children is something which you may be entirely unused to, but it may be that somebody comes into your life who does have children from a previous relationship. You will need to approach this from a different angle and there are number of things you need to bear in mind. Firstly, ask yourself the question whether you are good with kids, or not.

When considering dating men with children, understand that they will put their kids ahead of everything else and you need to not only accept this, but be fully embracing of the concept. It is understandable that, as a single woman, you may well want to raise kids of your own through childbirth, but don't expect to be able to forge an emotional link with them unless you first reach out in this way to the children.

When you try dating men with children, understand that the traditional methods of dating " i.e. two single people " will go out of the window. You will likely find that on the somewhat rare occasions that he is able to get away from the kids for an evening or afternoon to be with you, he will need pure escapism. You should not plan on doing anything which could be classified as mundane, as he will really want to blow off some steam during his off time.

Dating men with children requires you to be very flexible as his already busy schedule involves work and looking after the kids. As the children have their own schedule which can conflict with a parent's, you will have to fit your schedule in, which can be tricky. For example, sometimes he will have to go to a recital or to a ballgame and in any way, he will always want to spend as much time with them as possible.

Emotionally, dating men with children can be quite challenging as there is more than likely a protective emotional barrier in place. It is likely that he will shy away from any commitment of any kind until he is 100% sure that you are totally accepting of the children.

A father who has custody of his children will be very wary about entering into another relationship until he is sure that his children will be accepting of this. At any age a breakup is very difficult to deal with and kids can often take time to understand it and to come to any kind of closure. As a single girl vying for his attention, you will need to understand that and go out of your way to accept it.

Be prepared for a considerable challenge when dating men with children, especially as compared to a more conventional relationship. You may think he's difficult to get through to, but he is also looking for attention, romance and affection in his life. The difference is that he is very wary about making the same mistakes and will be especially looking out for the children above everything.
