Knowing When to End a Relationship - Diagnosing the 4 Sure Signs of Problems

By Paul Lindquist

A relationship that is having difficulty can be very stressful on those involved. Knowing when to end a relationship can be very tough under these circumstances. The challenge is that you might still be in love and don't want to call it quits.

Figuring out when to end a relationship gets less difficult when you can see the 4 signs that there might be trouble:

1. There is cheating going on in the relationship

Cheating is the first and most obvious sign of trouble in a relationship. If you or your partner are cheating, then the fundamental trust you had developed with your partner has been violated. How can the person cheating be trusted again? In figuring out when to end a relationship, cheating is a very strong sign. Some couples are able to work through this, but it will be very difficult.

2. Your partner is guilty of abuse toward you

If there is clear abuse going on, it must stop immediately, or it's time to end the relationship. No ifs, ands or buts. If you are being physically, mentally or verbally abused by your partner, get help now! NO ONE deserves to live under these circumstances!

3. You have lost respect for each other

In figuring out when to end a relationship, the next sign of possible trouble is if you and your partner no longer respect each other. How is the general flow of the conversation between the two of you? Are there a lot of kind words, or have the words become more mean and sarcastic? This has to end! You need to have a frank discussion about this and agree to resume respecting each other or end the relationship.

4. Your values are very different

This one is crucial. What do you want to do with your future? Would you like to have children? Do you want to live on a farm or in a high rise? What religion are you? And the biggest question-are these values shared by your mate?

Now, you don't need to be totally alike, obviously, but you should at least be of one mind about the overall direction of your lives. When determining when to end a relationship, if your big life values are different, then this may end up being a deal breaker.
