Catch a Cheater

By Robert Milhouse

It is often prudent to do things one's self. Often times, costs much less than hiring a professional, not to mention the sense of satisfaction that comes from tackling a project your self. Other times, however, attempting something you are unfamiliar with can make a huge mess that you simply cannot clean, and cost more in money, damage and effort that it would have if you had hired a pro to start with.

Research shows that investigations--particularly those involving a suspected cheating partner, fall in the latter category.

Every week some online news source has asked an alleged expert to list the "top ten signs your spouse is cheating," or some such tired piece of "information." While these often repeat some info, and leave off other important signs, they can be a good reference point for those who don't know where to start.

Finding out the truth is actually fairly easy for a licensed PI, and it doesn't usually cost a lot of money, or take much time. While nailing down the specifics may be a bit more difficult.

It is often fairly easy for a professional PI to find out if you should be worried. It likely won't require thousands of dollars and weeks of time like in the movies, either. In fact, quite often a phone number is all that is required to get the ball of discovery rolling.

Cell phones seem to give people a false sense of invisibility, which is why those with the most to hide--like cheaters--ALWAYS communicate by cellular phone. If you can figure out who your partner is secretly talking to, you will probably have the right place to start, and can figure out what's really been happening.

Talking by cell phone makes cheaters feel safe, so they don't bother hiding the fact that they are calling the same strange number dozens of times a day or week. Find out who is on the other end, and you will probably answer all of your questions. Again, this isn't the place for DIY sleuthing. First, if you get caught you could jeopardize the whole discovery process, as your partner will never again let their guard down. Secondly, you don't know when you're doing.

Discovering who the suspicious party is chatting with is usually all that is required to determine whether there is something to worry about or not. Sadly, there are many sites on the web that scam their customers by accepting payment, and then simply forwarding the customer to a different, unrelated site that performs legitimate phone number searches. Consumers should be careful and select sites that make it clear that they perform their own investigations rather that outsourcing the work.
